The descriptions of the universities are richly illustrated and listed in alphabetical order. The most important details (addresses, faculties, fields of research, professorships, etc.) are followed by the characteristics of each university and points of focus in its research and teaching activities. Important as well as amusing aspects of university life are examined in seven essays ranging from "Old Heidelberg, Thou Fair One!" to a brief discussion entitled "Networked with the Whole World." The essays are accompanied by carefully compiled sequences of illustrations which, in addition to their high quality, provide interesting insights, e.g. in the "Gallery of Scholars" and "From Campus to Tavern". These contributions are complemented by 37 graphs and commentaries on the German university and research system.
