Summary: This study on dictionary look-up strategies shows how think-aloud can be used as an effective research method in studying look-up strategies in depth. The study also shows how a coding scheme of ›look-up operation codes‹ can allow dictionary use researchers to analyze and describe dictionary look-up behaviour. The bilingualised learner's dictionary is shown to be highly usable and useful because of its compatibility with the language needs of learners. The claim that strategy use is complex is also supported by the results of this study.
